Bean There, Done That

For me, the aroma of a local coffee shop is the first true scent of a new city. More than just the roast, I'm seeking the unique pulse of a place: the atmosphere, the distinct character you won't find anywhere else, the hum of local connection. Consider it my personal "coffee crawl" as I delve into the hidden nooks and vibrant corners of each urban landscape, one cup at a time.

WYNNESOME

Columbia, Missouri

Tucked in between shops on Broadway, Wynnesome is a cozy and calming atmosphere that’s ideal for studying. I ordered an Earl Grey with a slice of “Death by Orange” cake. I absolutely love the set up, which adds to its peaceful aesthetic. The expansive amount of space is refreshing and I don’t feel as cramped, and the lighting is perfect for studying, especially if I’m sitting there for hours.

Layla & Ringo’s

Chicago

With a wide view of the John Hancock outside the cafe windows, this small shop in a neighborhood of River North is a laid back vibe. The logo that decorates their coffee cups, a relaxed poodle listening to music or eating a sandwich, encapsulates what the cafe is supposed to be: a place to hang out without feeling rushed. I sat in their outdoor area for a while, journalling and reading my devotional, occasionally people watching as they came and went.

Coroco Coffee

Sycamore, Illinois

A great stop on your way downtown, Coroco is the perfect place to grab a cup and enjoy a hometown flavor in every roast. With little seating left since recent renovations, Coroco is more of a grab and go, which gives customers a chance to sip while they explore other local businesses downtown. Even if you’re in a rush, it’s in a quiet, idle part of a neighborhood, so there’s no worry of waiting around. Still, I think it’s a great idea to pay a visit when you have a free day; that way, you can enjoy all the nice experiences Sycamore has to offer.

Acola

Columbia, Missouri

I feel confident that anyone who loves coffee and has lived in Columbia for a while will know of Acola. It’s a popular place, and it’s often hard to find seating, especially on the weekends or closer to finals week. Still, it’s a place worth visiting for the atmosphere. In my opinion, the downstairs level is a lot chattier than the top floor. You’ll find a good mix of people there studying and those who are chatting over a cup or two. I’ve gone for both reasons on different occasions. Sometimes, I can lock in, while other times, I’m just looking for another place outside of campus or my apartment to debrief with my friends.

Colectivo Coffee

Chicago

Honestly, one of the best coffees I’ve ever had. What stood out to me about this place while walking by is the fact that there was so much outdoor seating and almost every seat was filled. Granted, it was a beautiful day out, and the Cubs were playing nearby (we were in Lincoln Park). But it was busy, even in the afternoon, and I just had to see (and taste) for myself. I ordered their Cold Brew Oat-Chata, one of their most popular options, and they really delivered. Normally, oat milk can be a little loud in drinks, but it was a subtle taste, not too overpowering. It was a blend of well-balanced flavors. I will for sure be going back.
